Helping modern families uncover their birthing wisdom through childbirth preparation classes
This I Believe
I have been working with birthing couples for over thirty years! I was a (very) young woman when I became pregnant for the first time, I didn't know much about pregnancy or birth and a friend gave me a copy of Ina May Gaskin's book Spiritual Midwifery and told me that "birth was orgasmic." I don't know if I would describe my very long labor or birth as orgasmic but when my midwife caught my baby and put him on my belly and he picked up his head and looked at me, I fell completely in love - with him and with birth. I didn't know then that this would be my life's work but having had the privilege of attending hundreds of women and families over the years, this is the work I am most passionate about - helping mothers become mothers and fathers become fathers. This is the work I am called to do.
After my first birth, I trained in the Lamaze method of childbirth education and I started supporting my friends at their births - it was very informal. My second son was born at home a few years later and when both boys started school, I went back to work.
Over the years, I worked on breast cancer issues with the National Breast Cancer Coalition, worked to increase awareness about the benefits of clinical trials with NIH, worked on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program and provided training for medical students on women's health issues. I also spent time at the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine helping to make hospice and palliative medicine a recognized subspecialty of medicine.
In the mid-1990's a colleague became a doula and her experience sparked a memory that called me back to the birth world. I completed DONA's doula training and started attending births and teaching childbirth classes again.
I discovered Pam England and Birthing From Within in 2001 and have been mentoring these extraordinary birth preparation classes ever since. I am a certified Birthing From Within (BFW) Mentor and serve as an Advisor in the BFW mentor program.
I am also passionate about whole foods and have a certificate in Holistic Health Coaching from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and Columbia University Teachers College. I have a particular interest in the work of Weston Price and, as a member of the Weston A Price Foundation, spend some of my time creating and cooking delicious nutrient dense meals for my friends, family and clients.
“Your loving and able support was the best part of the process. We are eternally grateful to you.”
